What is ResearchMob?

Researchmob is a crowdfunding platform enabling the community, industry and academia to contribute funding towards innovative scientific research.

Why crowdfund scientific research?

Funds are directly distributed to the scientists conducting the research project, unlike receiving grands at a Universities where generally only 85-50% of total funds are received.

How does a donor benefit?

Scientists share progress and results directly with donors and a final published scientific paper is supplied to them.

Donors also have the choice to be acknowledged in the publication ,of which are usually open-sourced or cited, thereby having a direct scientific impact that is shared with the world.

Growing edible algae on the Moon

One of the biggest challenges for off-world life is the production of food. Astronauts need nutritionally dense, fast-growing and resource-efficient food that can be grown in a tiny amount of space. This experiment aims to grow spirulina algae to supply a nutritional supplement to the crew. Previous NASA experiments only tested dried spirulina algae. This experiment will test growing conditions and sentiments around fresh spirulina algae to enable nutrition for life in space.

Are climate change and air pollution triggering cardiovascular disease?

Ongoing global climate change and air pollution emissions pose a major threat to cardiovascular health. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias and is associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart failure, and mortality. However, environmental risk factors that trigger AFib remain unclear. Our goal is to address this knowledge gap. We aim to identify the environmental triggers of AFib and the most vulnerable population to such triggers.

Preventing the Accidental Spread of Genes from GMOs

Pollen from GMO crops can spread foreign genes (transgenes) to non-GMO crops, and even to wild plant species. Current methods to keep transgenes out of pollen are not very effective, so they are rarely used. For my science fair project, I am exploring a new approach that specifically targets the delivery of DNA to chloroplasts, which are parts of the cell that aren't found in pollen.

Recycling plastics using switchable solvents

Plastic waste is extremely durable and can be harmful to organisms and their ecosystems when not managed properly. While current recycling methods can efficiently process certain plastics, some common plastics are not recyclable. Switchable hydrophilicity solvents (SHS) change from biphasic to monophasic when exposed to CO2. I hypothesize that solvents with similar structures to plastics will separate plastic materials into base components more efficiently than current recycling methods.

Kelp Forest Restoration and Monitoring using Community Science

Since 2014, more than 96% of bull kelp in Northern California has been lost due to a combination of stressors linked to climate change. As a result, Reef Check Foundation works closely with project partners through several collaborative community-based efforts to restore and monitor the bull kelp forest in Northern California. The proposed funding will explore ecologically sound and economically sustainable solutions for kelp forest restoration using citizen science.
